Treasure Island

Picture
The Town of Thetford purchased the 11.5 acre Treasure Island site in 1972. The property is actually located in West Fairlee and a small portion in Fairlee. Thetford has operated Treasure Island under the auspices of its Recreation Department, employing a site manager and seasonal staff including lifeguards, swimming instructors, and youth activity leaders.

Treasure Island Committee

In 2020, the Town of Thetford created the Treasure Island Exploratory Committee comprised of community volunteers and chaired by an LFA board member. The committee name has been changed to the Treasure Island Committee, which is now a standing committee of the Thetford Selectboard. The committee's charge is to “develop a financially sustainable way to improve and maintain facilities and expand recreational and educational activities while adhering to best environmental practices.”

The Treasure Island Committee meets on the third Wednesday of every month at 6 p.m. in the Thetford town offices (with a
Zoom link in the online town calendar).

The Treasure Island Advisory Committee consists of seven citizens of Thetford, West Fairlee, and Fairlee empaneled by the Thetford Selectboard to consider approaches to rejuvenating Treasure Island as an inviting, affordable environment for public recreation on the shores of Lake Fairlee.

Committee members:
David Roth – Chair
Jim Zien
Dale Gephart
Ann Jane Kemon
Lucas Stepno
Doug Tifft
1 Vacant Seat

The TIE Committee meets (via Zoom) on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month.

Treasure Island Exploratory Committee - Annual Progress Report
At the October 18, 2021 Thetford selectboard meeting, David Roth gave an overview of the committee’s inception and their original charge. David said it has been an extraordinary and accomplished year, and committee members are proud of the work they have done. Doug Tifft conducted a brief review of the annual report. The committee has been considering ways to first add value to Treasure Island, and then consider ways of reducing costs.
