"Do unto those downstream as you would have those upstream do unto you."
- Wendell Berry
Wendell Erdman Berry is an American novelist, poet, essayist, environmental activist, cultural critic, and farmer.
Berry continues to live and work on his farm in his hometown, Port Royal, Kentucky where he was born in 1934.

The shoreland and watershed guide, At Home by the Water - Caring for Lake Fairlee and Its Watershed, is a collaboration by tri-town residents: Libby Chapin, formally of Post Mills; Peggy Willey, West Fairlee; Tom Ward, Thetford; and Bonnie MacAdam, Fairlee. Development of this guide was fully supported by the Lake Fairlee Association and funded with surplus LakeFest Celebration funds and the LFA membership.

This user-friendly book was created to inform and educate Lake Fairlee and watershed homeowners as to best practices that we, as homeowners, can do to help protect and preserve our fragile lake and watershed ecosystem.

Did you know:
  • There are 47 miles of tributaries that feed the lake?
  • The surface of Lake Fairlee is 462 acres.
  • The drainage basin, i.e., the watershed is 12,976 acres!
  • The single most important thing a waterfront property owner can do to protect the lake and watershed water quality is to create and maintain a vegetative buffer at the shoreline?
This book can help us all learn how to protect the lake and its watershed.

Please share this book with your family, house guests, renters, contractors, landscapers, and if selling your home, your realtor. Keep it available to use as a reference when doing projects on your property or when you have questions about which projects require a permit or who or where to go for answers.
